To prevent diabetes we must understand diabetes. In understanding the condition we know that there are ways to limit the possibility of contracting diabetes.
Diabetes is a complicated condition with many causes. One cause is our ability to influence dietary and physical conditions. Our diet is high-fat, high-carbohydrate, high-salt. Diet, and over-eating, is the main cause that we have some control over, and the habits that we should change in order to limit our chances of getting diabetes. Lifestyle changes are our only hope in the quest to prevent diabetes. But there is never a 100% guarantee that changing our lifestyle will prevent us from contracting the condition.

How can I prevent diabetes?
That is the real question.
And the real answer is that there is no sure-fire way of preventing diabetes.
You can limit the chances of contracting diabetes with a healthy diet, exercise and all the other healthy lifestyle suggestions made by the medical establishment, but it is not a 100% guarantee that diabetes will not come knocking at your door.
But do not take this statement to mean that you should not take the advice, and action it for your healthy well-being. Anything that can assist in limiting the chance of getting diabetes is a good choice to make. Diabetes is debilitating and life-threatening.
To avoid diabetes it is stated that we should
- eat well
- drink plenty of water
- sleep soundly.
We can prevent diabetes from taking over our lives but, unfortunately, if we are predisposed to, or have other ailments that cause diabetes to grab us, then the only way to prevent diabetes taking over our lives is to control diabetes.
Are Lifestyle Changes The Answer?
Diabetes is a pre-disposition.
We may go through life avoiding diabetes.
We may be able to avoid diabetes by controlling our lifestyle.
But there is no guarantee that we will avoid diabetes.
Do not believe that a controlled lifestyle automatically prevents diabetes.
Most experts would have us believe that “we can prevent diabetes”.
That is a partially false statement.
It is good to take control of your lifestyle, not only for diabetes prevention, but for health reasons in general. But do not believe that this will 100% guarantee that you will avoid diabetes.
The best way to help you to prevent diabetes taking hold, is to monitor your blood glucose levels, and your cholesterol.
If you see either of these rising then it is time to visit your health advisor to get help to avoid diabetes becoming a medication problem.
Many diabetics are able to control their diabetes by diet alone.
Why Can’t We Prevent Diabetes Totally?
Some things are just out of our control
Not only are there a number of different types of diabetes, there are also a number of different causes. Stating that one set of lifestyle changes will prevent you from getting the condition, is an over-simplification.
Diabetes is effectively one of two things:
- Changes in insulin production in the pancreas
- Changes in how effective insulin is in utilising blood glucose to transfer energy to cells
Either of these cases can be caused by:
- Traumatic events affecting the pancreas
- Other medical conditions
- Genetic make-up
- Simply getting old
We have some control over the first case, and that is where our concentration should be in preventing, as far as we are able, diabetes onset. We can influence the third case to some degree, with the assistance of our medical advisers.
The other three are simply out of our control. Those are the cases where fate and the ravages of time affect us. They are simply not preventable.
Prevent Diabetes: Conclusion
We cannot prevent diabetes 100% of the time.
There are situations where diabetes is unavoidable.
Our task, in limiting the possibility of contracting diabetes, is to take action where we can influence the outcome. Knowing when diabetes is becoming a likelihood, by monitoring blood glucose and cholesterol levels, is a good wake up call.
But before then any lifestyle change for the better, will assist in limiting the possible outcome.
